Five short years…
You don’t have to read Wired editor Chris Anderson’s new (and verging on propagandistic) book, Makers: The New Industrial Revolution, to know that 3D print has reached the tipping point. Verifying the momentum, Bloomburg has a new post touting the explosion in 3D printer sales since 2007. Apparently, “sales of printers that create solid objects and cost less than $5,000 grew more than 35,000 percent to 23,265 in 2011 from 66 five years ago.” Wow! 35,000 percent is crazy huge but that’s not too surprising when you consider affordable 3D printers were almost non-existent as a product a decade ago.
No doubt a lot can change in five years. The good news for the 3D printing business is a stark contrast to the decline in the newspaper printing business. Paper Cuts, a site that’s dedicated to documenting lay-offs and closures in the newspaper industry, provides a map of newspapers that ended their print editions in the same five year period.
It’s strange to think that a few generations from now the word “print” might be more commonly associated with objects than paper.Bookmark / Share / Print
