Studio Visit: University of Minnesota Duluth

No, the print studios at the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMND) don’t have buffalo and moose heads mounted on the wall above the graining sink (they are down the hall in the science building), but a person can always dream of a stranger future.
On a recent visit to Duluth, UMND School of Fine Arts‘s Department of Art & Design, this Printeresting contributor was lucky enough to spend some time meeting with students and faculty, and checking out the print studio. The first thing you notice in the UMND print studio is the bright nordic light streaming in through the wall of windows; secondly, it’s spacious, and shockingly clean. I had to summarize the design ethos: functional minimalism, with a sense of humor.

The intaglio studio, above.

The student union had the most amazing vending machines.

Follow this photo tour after the jump!

The Litho studio.

Professors Robert Repinski & Lydia Diemer run a tight ship.

Hockey stickers have invaded the restrooms.

This jar is all that is left from the fabled non-toxic Utz Pretzel Etch experiments.

Litho-stone & screen storage.

Some exciting new screen printing tables.

A little end-grain wood engraving.

Gouging… will it ever end?

It’s not like it’s hard to not gouge.

Great intaglio tonal illustration.

Mysteriously small scrub brushes.

Maybe it’s because I teach in a studio with no windows, but I can’t get enough of this light.

Printeresting: purveyor of smart print activism since 2008!

I found this sign more than a little frightening.

More printeresting props!

Delightful office installation.

We had a bit of time to explore some of the other buildings on campus.

Floor Graphics!

Sorry to miss the updated meteorite display.

When given the option, always house your visiting artists in a waterside hotel theme park!
