NEW! Inkster FOR SIDEBAR

Speaking of Coffins and Printmaking..

d2cstozc

The last post reminded me of Glen Baldridge’s scratch-off coffin print series “Lucky Seven’s”. This one is Lucky Sevens (Titan),  it was published by Forth Estate in 2008 and printed by Axelle Editions. The print you see above is an image from a coffin catalog that has been over-printed with scratch-off ink (think:  Scratch-off Lotto Tickets), and then someone scratched off the ink (I guess they were feeling lucky).

If you dig this work and are in the greater New York area be sure to check out his exhibit at Klaus Von Nichtssagend Gallery in Brooklyn, May 1st – June 7th.

Print is Dead (but not in the death-care industry)

Colourful Coffins® are made from “a high quality, high strength material created from recycled waste paper. All designs are printed and applied to the coffin using a biodegradable material wrap.”

Choose from dozens of tasteful designs, many of which can be customized:

Disaffected: The Kinko’s Experience

Virtual copying and collating, anyone? A recent trip to Kinko’s/Fedex reminded me of this little gem that was released a few years back. One look at the apathetic face behind the counter and I thought, “Oh yeah… Disaffected!

game2

Disaffected! is a video game released by Persuasive Games that allows a player to navigate the mundane tasks and customer complaints of a virtual Kinko’s employee. As the promo site explains, “obstacles include confused employees, employees who refuse to work, employees who move orders around indiscriminately so the player cannot find them.” The copy center in rendered in beautiful isometric pixelation.

When I make the trip to Kinko’s now, it’s to ship packages through FedEx. It’s a necessary errand that I would gladly avoid. But as an art student, I liked going to Kinko’s. As much as it was a fluorescent-lit box filled with corporate schlock and frustrated people, it was also a pre-photoshop, white-collar art workshop. The copiers were full of potential. There’s speculation that the makers of this game must distain Kinko’s but I think maybe it’s the opposite. Why else would they put in so much time and energy into make a boring video game? It may be called Disaffected! but ultimately, I sense some empathy (and maybe even love) for the subject.

DIY custom surgical masks

Maybe you can’t afford professionally-customized surgical masks. But don’t let a pandemic stop you from hitting the streets in style…print your own!

In the midst of the 2003 SARS epidemic, Allen Bukoff stamped up these informative promo items for Ohio rockers Tin Huey:

Print on Meat!!

meatcards

Meatcards is an enterprising venture that wants to print your contact information onto a piece of jerky.

In their own words:

We start with 100% beef jerky, and SEAR your contact information into it with a 150 WATT CO2 LASER.

Screw die-cutting. Forget about foil, popups, or UV spot lamination. THESE business cards have two ingredients:
MEAT AND LASERS.

Unlike other business cardsMEAT CARDS will retain value after the econopocalypse. Hoard and barter your calorie-rich, life-sustaining cards.

MEAT CARDS do not fit in a Rolodex, because their deliciousness CANNOT BE CONTAINED in a Rolodex.

Who doesn’t love delicious jerky + contact information?

I am curious if they can they print on to 18×24″ sheets of jerky?

Paul Slocum’s Dot Matrix Synth

I don’t pretend to understand the how-to involved in turning an old digital printer into a musical instrument but I definitely appreciate the effort. Paul Slocum has taken this idea through three variations so far. Here’s a pic of its most recent manifestation- Dot Matrix Synth Version 3.0.

printer_buttons2

The third version of the project has an interactive component where the viewer can influence the piece. From Slocum’s website…

The user presses buttons on an attached control interface to play different notes. As the printer is played, it’s also printing a set of images that are programmed into the printer’s EPROM with the software.

The printer creates sound from the print head firing pins against the paper and the vibration of the stepper motor driving the print head back and forth. To generate different notes, the software adjusts the frequency of the printing process. Higher pitches tend to come from the firing of the pins against the paper, and lower pitches come from the rattle of driving the stepper motor.

So there’s a sound component and an image component. Depending on what notes are played, the dithering pattern of the image varies. We can’t embed sound files into our site so you’ll have to visit Slocum’s site if you want to hear a sample of this printer-made music. Fair warning: if you’re hoping for CCR, you’re going to be disappointed. We can provide an example of one of the print outs…

Viva Los Videos! Grafica Fidalga

Coolhunting visits Grafica Fidalga, a printing press in São Paulo, Brazil:

YouTube Preview Image

Called “lambe lambe,” the lightweight paper used for the posters was designed for wheat-pasting and, before São Paulo’s “clean city” initiative, could be found throughout the city. Thanks to the gallery Choque Cultural, who regularly makes posters for their shows with Grafica Fidalga, they’ve been able to stay alive but they could still use more help. If you’re in the market for an inexpensive poster that will put any slick offset version to shame, email the gallery’s director Edu (esaretta [at] gmail [dot] com).

In Times of Crisis Print offers Catharsis

26icelandb_large

A recent New York Times article about the financial meltdown in Iceland, At the Polls, Icelanders Punish Conservatives, written by John Burns; while not in the least about print featured this oddly amusing/gratifying photograph of the healing power of the multiple. The caption reads:

Photographs of bankers who left Iceland after the financial crisis have a new use in the restroom of a bar in Reykjavik, the capital.

The photograph was take by the photojournalist Olivier Morin (AFP/Getty Images) and is copyright 2009 New York Times.
